Most companies have the attitude that they can do it all themselves, and yes they are right. But if your clothing company, or a garage, maybe even a restaurant at the end of the day you probably have filled trash bins in the office, kitchen, garage, and bathroom, or the floor has spilled coffee, and whatever someone brought in under their shoes. You can easily have an employee quickly sweep and vacuum, sweep or mop, change the bins with a fresh new bag, and voila the place is clean.
But is it clean? No, not even close. An employee who takes care of clients is not trained in what products to use, how to disinfect a trash bin and do you know how much bacteria is even in that thing. Hygiene is key. COVID-19 proved that, (and I’m only using COVID-19 as an example because it’s fresh in our minds). The transmission of bacteria and viruses can be transferred from hand to hand, door knobs, trash bins, sink handles, and toilets, and some viruses are even air born.
Just to make a point, do you as a business manager, owner, or human resource person recognize how many hours are lost to days off due to colds, fevers, and the flu? It’s more than we would like to admit.
So why did I write this blog? I’m from Montreal, and I decided to share what I see locally and have experienced. In my personal time, shopping with the wife or out with friends I have been to places where I was extremely disappointed, even discoursed of the state of cleanliness of some of what I believed were my go-to spots, and let me tell you I’ve left restaurants, walked out of stores where employees have colds or the place looked unkempt. Now I’m not fussy but I do have standards and I am into self-care and awareness of what’s going on around me. And since the pandemic, I’m taking no chances.
This is me now going through my new steps in hiring someone for maintenance. In my businesses which are printing and graphics. We now have a maintenance person from an external company come in and take care of the cleaning. They did the normal things we all do but I was impressed to see that they had a schedule for things we don’t normally look at, they were doing railings and door handles daily, and they wiped the mouse and computer keys lightly with a damp sanitized cloth. They made sure that there were sanitizer placed in strategic places and this is to name a few. I was blown away and appreciated the attention to detail.
In my quest to look for good companies that were in my price range – which means affordable and not over the top, I set up some criteria. I didn’t want to go with a big firm, I learned that a lot of the employees are trained on the job and the turnover is quite high. I was looking for more of a family-run business like mine, with 5 to 10 employees and where the owners were involved in the process. You knew that they wanted to make sure you were well served and in no way they wanted to have a bad reputation. I also wanted to make sure they were not a fly-by-night company and that they had other contracts, maybe even a few big accounts. I went through my list and started my search. Yeah, I know all this for a cleaning company. Why not! If I’m going to spend the money why not look at this the same way as though I was to hire an employee for my own company? The list got smaller and smaller and then I came across one company that looked like they fit my criteria. But there was only one problem. They were located in St-Jean sur le Richelieu. After speaking with the owners I was happy to find out they service Montreal as well happy to say we now have a really great relationship.
